This week we will talk about a sweet, yet unusual creature, the snail.

Did you know that there are over 60,000 species of snails?  Wild snails can live up to seven years.  But those that are raised in captivity can live up to 25 years!  They have teeth!  They can sleep up to THREE years at a time.  They are born with their shells, and never ever replace them.

Snails are pretty spectacular but often overlooked because the ones we see in our area are so very tiny.  We hope you enjoy learning more about the snail.

We will be reading Escargot by Dashka Slater, a fun picture book about a snail who might be on the menu.  We will also explore Big as a Giant Snail: Discovering the World’s Most Gigantic Animals by Jess Keating.

Out activity will involve a technique called paper quilling.  To mimic the shape of the snail’s shell, kids will take strips of paper, quill it around a pencil, and then create a beautiful mosaic for their snail friend.
